Guides
- 2026 RMD Deadline: December 31 or April 1, 2027? — Your 2026 RMD is due by December 31, 2026, unless 2026 is your first RMD year (born 1953): then you can wait until April 1, 2027, at the cost of two RMDs in 2027.
- Missed an RMD? The 25% (or 10%) Excise and Form 5329 — A missed or short RMD carries a 25% excise tax on the shortfall, cut to 10% if you correct it in time. How to take the shortfall, file Form 5329 and ask for a waiver.
- QCDs and Your 2026 RMD: the $111,000 Limit — A qualified charitable distribution from an IRA counts toward that year's IRA RMD and isn't taxed. In 2026 the limit is $111,000 per person, from age 70½, IRAs only.
